Learning the Silent G

  1. Silent G Before the Letter N
    The most common occurrence of a silent G is when it appears before the letter N.
    Examples: Gnaw, Gnash, Gnome, Sign, Design, Resign
  2. Silent G in Words with “GH”
    The letter G can also be silent when it appears in the combination GH. Sometimes it makes an /f/ sound (like in “cough” or “rough”), but often it is completely silent.
    Examples: Though, Sigh, High, Drought

  3. Unique Words with Silent G
    Some words have silent G due to historical usage or loanwords from other languages.
    Examples: Foreign, Campaign, Reign
