The letter B represents the sound /b/, which is a voiced consonant. It is produced by pressing your lips together and releasing them while using your vocal cords. The letter “B” makes the sound /b/, like at the beginning of ball or bat.

How to Use the Worksheet
This worksheet is designed to build phonemic awareness (isolating where a sound occurs in a word) and graphemic integration (connecting that sound to the physical stroke of writing the lowercase letter b).

Here is a guide on how to facilitate and use each part of the worksheet with kindergarten students.

Pre-Worksheet Activity (Warm-Up)
Before handing out the page, model the target sound. Kindergarteners often struggle with adding a “schwa” sound to consonants (saying “buh” instead of a crisp /b/).

1. Ask students to put their lips together and make a short, voiced pop: /b/.
   
2. Have them feel their neck to notice their vocal cords vibrating.
   
3. Practice a couple of oral examples: “If I say big, do you hear /b/ at the start or the end?” Then try tub.
   

Part 1: Where do you hear the /b/ sound?
This section targets auditory isolation using a clean, repeating visual grid.
Steps to Complete:

1. Identify the Picture: Direct the child to look at the emoji icon inside the grid cell and read the all-caps tracking word underneath (e.g., BEAR).
   
2. Segment the Sounds: Have the child stretch the word out slowly: “B-e-a-r.”
   
3. Locate the Target Sound: Ask: “Did your lips make the popping /b/ sound at the very beginning when you started the word, or at the very end when you finished the word?”
   
4. Mark the Box: Students can use a crayon or marker to color in the matching option box (START or END), or place a clear checkmark inside it.

Part 2: Trace and Write
This section connects the phonics sound to fine motor handwriting skills, targeting word completion and whole-word reproduction. Steps to Complete:

1. Trace the Dotted Letter: Have the student trace the light grey letter b (which sits on a dashed visual underline rule). Encourage them to start at the top line, dive straight down, travel back up halfway, and bounce around to the right to form the belly.
   
2. Read the Full Word: Blend the newly completed letter with the rest of the fixed text (e.g., blending b + ee to make bee).
   
3. Independent Writing Practice: On the wide blue-grey dashed line (.writing-line) to the right of the word, have the student practice writing the entire word completely on their own.
