Learning the “M” Sound
The /m/ sound is a consonant sound made by pressing your lips together and letting the sound come out through your nose. It’s a common and easy sound for young learners to identify and practice.

Spelling Patterns for the /m/ Sound

  1. The most common way to spell the /m/ sound is with the letter “m."
    At the beginning of words:
    Examples: man, map, moon, mother, mouse
    In the middle of words:
    Examples: camel, lemon, summer, hammer
    At the end of words:
    Examples: drum, room, jam, gum

  2. Double “MM”
    The /m/ sound is often spelled as “mm” when it comes between two vowels.
    Examples: comma, summer, hammer, common

  3. The Silent “B” After “M”
    In some words, the /m/ sound is followed by a silent “b” at the end of the word.
    Examples: comb, lamb, thumb, bomb
