Learning the “P” Sound
The letter P represents the /p/ sound, which is a voiceless consonant. It is made by pressing the lips together and releasing a small burst of air. The /p/ sound is one of the first sounds children learn and is found in many common words.

Spelling Patterns for the /p/ Sound
- Single Letter “P”
The most common way to represent the /p/ sound is with the letter P.
At the Beginning: pig, pot, pan, pen, park
In the Middle: apple, open, happy, puppet
At the End: cap, map, tap, lip, hop - Double “P” (pp)
A double “P” often occurs in the middle of words, particularly in two-syllable words with a short vowel preceding the /p/ sound.
Examples: apple, happy, pepper, puppet, ripple - “Ph” for /f/ Sound (Misleading for /p/ Learners)
While not representing the /p/ sound, learners may encounter “ph” spelling. It produces the /f/ sound, not /p/.
Examples: phone, photo, elephant, graph - Silent “P”
In some words, the P is silent, especially in Greek-derived terms, but it can confuse learners focusing on the /p/ sound.
Examples: psychology, psalm, pseudonym, pneumonia
