The SAT is an important test. It’s different from the tests that you’re used to taking in school. However, don’t worry. The SAT is a predictable test and you can be well prepared through practice.

Changes to the SAT 2025
The SAT has undergone a major transformation in recent years, with the 2025 version solidifying a new, fully digital format. These changes are designed to make the test shorter, more efficient, and more tailored to each student.

Here’s a breakdown of the key changes for the SAT in 2025:
1. The Test is Now Fully Digital
This is the most significant change. The paper-and-pencil SAT is no longer offered. All students, both in the U.S. and internationally, will take the test on a computer or tablet using the College Board’s Bluebook application.

2. Shorter Test and Fewer Questions
The total time for the test has been significantly reduced, which aims to decrease student fatigue and anxiety.
Total Time: The test now takes 2 hours and 14 minutes, a reduction from the previous 3 hours.
Total Questions: The number of questions has also been reduced, from 154 to 98.

3. Adaptive Testing
This new feature is a core component of the digital format. The test is divided into two sections: Reading & Writing and Math. Each section has two modules.
Module 1: The first module in each section contains a mix of questions with varying difficulty levels.
Module 2: Your performance on the first module determines the difficulty of the second module. Students who perform well on Module 1 get a harder set of questions in Module 2, while those who struggle get an easier set.
Scoring: The adaptive nature of the test allows for a more precise measurement of a student’s ability in a shorter amount of time.

4. Consolidated Sections
The traditional three-section structure (Reading, Writing and Language, and Math) has been streamlined into two main sections: Reading and Writing: This section combines the old Reading and Writing & Language sections. It features a series of short passages, each followed by a single question.
Math: The Math section covers the same content areas (Algebra, Advanced Math, Problem-Solving and Data Analysis, and Geometry and Trigonometry).

5. Other Notable Changes
Built-in Calculator: A built-in graphing calculator (Desmos) is now available for the entire Math section. Students can also still bring their own approved calculators.
Shorter Reading Passages: The long, multi-question reading passages have been replaced with shorter, more focused passages (or passage pairs) that are only tied to one question each.
Faster Score Reporting: Because the test is digital, scores are now available within days instead of weeks.
No Negative Marking: There is no penalty for incorrect answers, so it is always in a student’s best interest to guess if they are unsure.

Changes to the SAT 2021

  1. SAT Subject Tests will be discontinued in the U.S.
  2. The optional SAT Essay has been eliminated.
  3. The SAT will become more flexible.
