Understanding the difference between the short “O” sound and the long “O” sound is an important part of learning vowel sounds.

Short “O” Sound
Description: The short “O” sound is a quick and open sound, as in “octopus."
Examples: pot, top, dog, rock, log

Long “O” Sound
Description: The long “O” sound says its name, as in “open."
Examples: rope, note, boat, snow, toe

Common Patterns for Long “O”
O_E: Silent “E” at the end makes the “O” long.
Examples: rope, note, home

OA: Found in the middle of a word.
Examples: boat, coat, road

OW: Found at the end of a word or syllable.
Examples: snow, grow, throw

OE: Found at the end of some words.
Examples: toe, hoe, foe

O (Open Syllable): The “O” is long when it appears at the end of an open syllable.
Examples: go, no, robot
