Types of Sentences for Kids

  1. Declarative (Telling Sentences):
What they do: Telling sentences tell us something. They give information or state a fact.
How to spot them: They end with a period (.).

Examples:
The dog barks.
I like ice cream.
My favorite color is blue.
The sun is shining.
Activity: Have kids tell you simple facts about themselves, their toys, or their surroundings.

  1. Interrogative (Asking Sentences):
What they do: Asking sentences ask a question. They want to know something.
How to spot them: They end with a question mark (?).

Examples:
What is your name?
Where are you going?
Do you like to play?
Is it raining outside?
Activity: Play a question-and-answer game. Ask simple questions like “What color is your shirt?” or “What is your favorite animal?”

  1. Imperative (Ordering Sentences):
What they do: Ordering sentences tell someone to do something. They give commands or instructions. Sometimes they are requests.
How to spot them: They often start with a verb (an action word). They usually end with a period (.), but can also end with an exclamation point (!) if it’s a strong command.

Examples:
Close the door.
Please sit down.
Wash your hands!
Be careful!
Activity: Play “Simon Says,” which uses ordering sentences.

  1. Exclamatory (Exciting Sentences):
What they do: Exciting sentences show strong feelings like surprise, excitement, or anger.
How to spot them: They end with an exclamation point (!).

Examples:
Wow! That’s amazing!
What a big dog!
Ouch! That hurts!
I won the game!
Activity: Have kids express different emotions using exclamatory sentences. “I’m so happy!” “I’m so surprised!"
