How to play the “One More, One Less” Game

1. Choose your number range: Key in the range of numbers and click “Start Game”
   
2. Look at the Question: The question is either “What is one more than _?” or “What is one less than _?”.
   
3. Enter Your Answer: Type your answer into the box with the question mark ?.
   
4. Check Your Work: Click the Check button (or press the Enter key). The game will tell you if you’re correct. If you are wrong, you will be shown the correct answer.
   
5. Get a New Problem: Click the Next button (or press Enter again) for a new problem.
   Your score is tracked at the top, showing how many you’ve gotten right out of the total you’ve tried.
6. Change Range: Click “Change Range” to go back to the Start screen.
    
   

Finding “One More” (Adding 1)
“One more” means the number that comes immediately after a given number when you are counting up. Mathematically, it’s the same as adding 1.

Step-by-Step

1. Start with your number.
   
2. Count up one time.
    
   Example: What is one more than 7?
   Start at 7.
   Count one number higher: 8.
   So, one more than 7 is 8.
   (Equation: 7+1=8)
    
   Example with a two-digit number: What is one more than 29?
   When you add 1 to a number that ends in 9, you have to regroup and move to the next whole ten.
   29+1=30.
    
   

Finding “One Less” (Subtracting 1)
“One less” means the number that comes immediately before a given number when you are counting backward. Mathematically, it’s the same as subtracting 1.
 
Step-by-Step

1. Start with your number.
   
2. Count back one time.
    
   Example: What is one less than 14?
   Start at 14.
   Count one number lower: 13.
   So, one less than 14 is 13.
   (Equation: 14−1=13)
    
   Example with a number ending in 0: What is one less than 50?
   When you subtract 1 from a number that ends in 0, you have to regroup and move back to the previous ten.
   50−1=49.
