Strategies for Subtract from 10
Several strategies can help you subtract from 10 mentally, often by using your knowledge of number pairs that add up to 10. These methods are particularly helpful for building foundational math skills.

  1. Counting Back or Counting Up
This is a basic but effective strategy.
Counting Back: To solve 10−3, you can start at 10 and count backward three numbers: 9, 8, 7. The answer is 7. This works well for subtracting small numbers like 1, 2, or 3.
Counting Up: To solve 10−7, you can start at 7 and count up to 10. You would count 8, 9, 10, which is three numbers. Therefore, the answer is 3. This is useful when the number you are subtracting is close to 10.

  2. Using “Friends of 10”
This strategy leverages the concept of number bonds, which are pairs of numbers that add up to a specific total, in this case, 10. For example, the number pairs for 10 are: 1+9, 2+8, 3+7, 4+6, 5+5, 0+10
If you know these pairs, you can quickly solve subtraction problems. For a problem like 10−6, you can think, “What number added to 6 makes 10?” The answer is 4. Conversely, for a problem like 10−4, you know the other “friend” of 10 is 6. This method builds a strong sense of number relationships. You can use the Number Bonds Game to practice the number pairs.

  3. Memorizing Facts
The final step is to practice these strategies until you can recall the answers instantly. This is called achieving fluency. You can use flashcards, worksheets, or the subtraction game to memorize the answers from 0 - 0 up to 9 - 0. Once you have them memorized, you won’t even have to think about the strategies; the answers will just come to you!
