2-Digit + 1-Digit (Regrouping) Game

The “2-digit + 1-digit with regrouping” game is a step up in difficulty from the 2-digit + 1-digit with no regrouping game

In this game, you will need to know how to regroup. In this context, regrouping means that the sum of the digits in the ones place is 10 or greater. This requires you to “carry over” a group of ten into the tens place. The game would generate problems that specifically force this action, challenging players to master this fundamental skill. Scroll down the page if you need to revise addition with regrouping.

Strategies for Regrouping
Learning to regroup is a key step in mastering addition. Here are some effective strategies that can help make the concept easier to understand.

  1. The Standard Algorithm (The “Carry Over” Method)
    This is the classic way most people learn addition. The key is to start with the ones column and work your way to the left.
    Step 1: Set up the problem. Write the numbers vertically, aligning them by place value.
    Step 2: Add the ones and regroup. If you get a 2-digit number, for example 12, you need to write ‘2’ in the ones place and carry over the ‘1’ to the top of the tens column.
    Step 3: Add the tens. Now, add all the numbers in the tens column, including the ‘1’ you carried over.
    Step 4: Write the final answer.

  2. The “Breaking Apart” or Expanded Form Method
    This strategy helps you visualize the value of each digit. You break the numbers down into their tens and ones, add them separately, and then combine them.
    Step 1: Expand the numbers. Break down each number into its place values.
    For 28+4:
    28=20+8
    4=0+4
    Step 2: Add the parts. Add the tens together and the ones together.
    20+0=20
    8+4=12
    Step 3: Combine the sums. Add the results from step 2 to get the final answer.
    20+12=32
