It involves taking a group of ten from the next higher place value column and adding it to the smaller digit’s place value, allowing the subtraction to be performed. How to Play the 2-Digit - 1-Digit (Regrouping) Game
- Look at the Problem: You’ll see two numbers at the top of the red box. Your goal is to subtract them. Be aware that you may need to regroup.
- Enter Your Answer: Type your answer into the box with the question mark ?.
- Check Your Work: Click the yellow Check button (or press the Enter key). The game will tell you if you’re correct. If you are wrong, you will be shown the correct answer.
- Get a New Problem: Click the blue Next button (or press Enter again) for a new subtraction problem.

When is regrouping needed?
Regrouping is necessary when you encounter a situation where you can’t directly subtract the bottom number from the top number in a specific place value column.
How does regrouping work?
- Identify the place value column where regrouping is needed.
- Borrow 1 from the digit to the left (the next higher place value).
- This borrowing adds 10 to the digit you’re working with in the current column, allowing the subtraction to be performed.
- The digit you borrowed from is reduced by 1.
