This Subtract from Whole 100 Game is a great way to put your skills to the test in a fun environment. The game will help improve your subtraction from 100 skills through mental math. You can use the traditional regrouping method, the “Box Method “or the “Subtract One” Method. These methods also works for any minuend that is digit followed by zeros, eg. 400, 6000, 90000 etc.

Strategies for Subtract from Whole 100
When you encounter a zero in the minuend (the top number) and need to borrow, you can’t borrow from a zero. This necessitates moving to the next non-zero digit to the left. The most common strategies are the standard regrouping method, the box method, and the “subtract one” method.

A. The Standard Regrouping Method
This is the traditional, step-by-step process of borrowing. It is a fundamental skill for understanding place value.

  1. Start with the ones column. For example, you’re solving 200 − 56. The top ones digit is zero and you need to borrow/regroup from the tens.
  2. Move to the tens column to borrow. Since there is a zero in the tens place, you can’t borrow from it.
  3. Move to the left to the hundreds columns. Borrow from the hundreds place. Reduce the digit by 1. The 1 you borrowed from the hundreds place makes the adjacent zero (the tens place) a 10.
  4. Now that the tens place is a 10, you can borrow from it to help the ones place. The 10 becomes a 9, and the ones place becomes a 10.
  5. Subtract. Now you can subtract each column from right to left.

B. The Box Method

  1. Identify the zeros: Find the place values where you need to borrow (the zeros). Borrowing:
  2. If you have multiple zeros in a row, treat them as a single unit. Change the rightmost zero to a 10. Then, change each preceding zero to a 9, effectively “passing” the borrow.
  3. Borrow from the next non-zero digit to the left. Reduce that digit by 1.
  4. Subtract: Now that you have borrowed and adjusted the numbers, perform the subtraction as usual.

This video gives a clear, step-by-step approach to walk through the “Box Method” for subtraction.

    C. The “Subtract One Method”
This is a clever shortcut that can make subtracting across multiple zeros much faster and less prone to error.
This method is most useful when the minuend is a digit followed by zeros.
    For example, to solve 100 - 56:
Subtract 1 from both numbers. This changes the problem to 99−55.
Subtract the new numbers. Because there are no zeros, you can subtract straight down each column without regrouping. The answer is 99−55=44.
This method works because the difference between two numbers remains the same when you subtract the same amount from both numbers.
