3-Digit - 2-Digit (Regrouping) Game

The “3-digit - 2-digit with regrouping” game is a step up in difficulty from the 2-digit - 2-digit with regrouping game

In this game, you will need to know how to regroup. Regrouping in subtraction, also known as borrowing, is a technique used when subtracting numbers where a digit in the minuend (the number you’re subtracting from) is smaller than the corresponding digit in the subtrahend (the number being subtracted). It involves taking a group of ten from the next higher place value column and adding it to the smaller digit’s place value, allowing the subtraction to be performed. The game would generate problems that specifically force this action, challenging players to master this fundamental skill. Scroll down the page if you need to revise subtraction with regrouping.

When is regrouping needed?
Regrouping is necessary when you encounter a situation where you can’t directly subtract the bottom number from the top number in a specific place value column.

How does regrouping work?

  1. Identify the place value column where regrouping is needed.
  2. Borrow 1 from the digit to the left (the next higher place value).
  3. This borrowing adds 10 to the digit you’re working with in the current column, allowing the subtraction to be performed.
  4. The digit you borrowed from is reduced by 1.

The video gives a clear, step-by-step approach to walk through the regrouping process for subtraction.
