Strategies for Mental Addition
Learning to add in your head is a powerful skill that can make math much faster and more intuitive. Instead of counting on your fingers, you’ll learn to see the relationships between numbers to quickly find the answer.

  1. Counting Strategies
    Counting On
Start with the largest number and count the remaining numbers to reach the sum. For example, to solve 5 + 3, start at 5 and count: 6, 7, 8.
    Counting by Tens and Ones
Add the tens first, then add the ones. For 148 + 36, add the 30 from 36 to 148 to get 178, then add the remaining 6 to get 184.

  2. Partitioning/Decomposition Strategies
    Split Strategy (Partitioning)
    Break each number into its tens and ones and add the components separately. For example, 46 + 23 becomes 40 + 20 + 6 + 3, which is then added to 60 + 9 = 69.
    Add in Parts
Break one number into parts to reach an easier sum. To add 24 + 52, think of 52 as 50 and 2. Add 20 and 50 to get 70, then add the remaining 4 and 2 to get 6, for a total of 76.

  3. Adjustment Strategies
    Make to the Next Ten
Adjust one number to reach the next easy multiple of ten, then adjust the total. To add 48 + 24, add 2 to 48 to make 50. Add the 24 to the 50 to get 74, then adjust for the 2 you added earlier, so 74 - 2 = 72.
    Compensation (Rounding)
Round one or both numbers to a nearby multiple of 10 to make the addition simpler. For 37 + 58, add 2 to 37 to make 39 (for an easy 40), add 58 to 37 to get 95, and then add the 2 back to your answer.

  4. Using Known Facts
    Doubles and Near Doubles
Use known doubles facts to solve problems involving numbers close to each other. For 14 + 15, know that double 14 is 28, so 15 must be one more than 28.
    Compatible Numbers
Use numbers that are easy to add or subtract, such as numbers that add to make a ten.

By practicing these strategies, you will build the “number sense” that allows you to solve problems quickly in your head. The addition game is a great place to practice these mental tricks until they become second nature.
