How to Play the 2-Digit + 2-Digit (Regrouping) Game

1. Look at the Problem: You’ll see two numbers at the top of the purple box. Your goal is to add them together. Be aware that you will need to regroup.
   
2. Enter Your Answer: Type the sum of the two numbers into the box with the question mark ?.
   
3. Check Your Work: Click the green Check button (or press the Enter key). The game will tell you if you’re correct. If you are wrong, you will be shown the correct answer.
   
4. Get a New Problem: Click the yellow Next button (or press Enter again) for a new addition problem.
   Your score is tracked at the top, showing how many you’ve gotten right out of the total you’ve tried.
    
   

Strategies for Regrouping

1. The Standard Algorithm (The “Carry Over” Method)
   This is the classic way most people learn addition. The key is to start with the ones column and work your way to the left.
   Step 1: Set up the problem. Write the numbers vertically, aligning them by place value.
   Step 2: Add the ones and regroup. If you get a 2-digit number, for example 12, you need to write ‘2’ in the ones place and carry over the ‘1’ to the top of the tens column.
   Step 3: Add the tens. Now, add all the numbers in the tens column, including the ‘1’ you carried over.
   Step 4: Write the final answer.
    
   
2. The “Breaking Apart” or Expanded Form Method
   This strategy helps you visualize the value of each digit. You break the numbers down into their tens and ones, add them separately, and then combine them.
   Step 1: Expand the numbers. Break down each number into its place values.
   For 28+14:
   28=20+8
   14=10+4
   Step 2: Add the parts. Add the tens together and the ones together.
   20+10=30
   8+4=12
   Step 3: Combine the sums. Add the results from step 2 to get the final answer.
   30+12=42
