How to Play the 3-digit + 2-digit Column Adder Game

  1. Select Difficulty: Select “No Regrouping” or “With Regrouping”.
  2. Enter Your Answer: Add the digits in columns from right to left. Typing a number automatically moves the cursor to the next column to the left. If you chose regrouping then be careful to regroup when necessary. You can put the carry digit at the top of the tens place to help you remember. (Take note that the game will not check your carry digit)
  3. Check Your Work: Click the green Check button (or press the Enter key). The game will tell you if you’re correct. If you are wrong, you will be asked to try again.
  4. Get a New Problem: Click the Next button (or press Enter again) for a new addition problem.
Your score is tracked at the top, showing how many you’ve gotten right out of the total you’ve tried.

3-digit + 2-digit Column Addition
Adding a 2-digit number to a 3-digit number follows the “Place Value” rule. You must align the Ones with the Ones and the Tens with the Tens.

The Golden Rule: Alignment
Always line up your numbers starting from the right side.
Hundreds: The 3-digit number has one, the 2-digit number does not.
Tens: Line them up vertically.
Ones: Line them up vertically.

Example: No Regrouping
Example: 152 + 34
Ones: 2 + 4 = 6.
Tens: 5 + 3 = 8.
Hundreds: 1 + 0 = 1.
Total: 186.

Example: Regrouping (Double Carrying)
Sometimes, you have to carry numbers twice. Once from the ones to the tens, and once from the tens to the hundreds.
Example: 275 + 58
Step-by-Step Breakdown:

  1. Add the Ones: 5 + 8 = 13. Write 3 in the ones place, carry the 1 to the tens.
  2. Add the Tens: 1 (carry) + 7 + 5 = 13. Write 3 in the tens place, carry the 1 to the hundreds.
  3. Add the Hundreds: 1 (carry) + 2 = 3.
  4. Final Answer: 333.

Things to Remember

  1. Placeholder Zero: If it helps you, imagine a 0 in the hundreds place of the smaller number. (058 instead of just 58).
  2. Even if your 3-digit number starts with a 9 (like 950 + 70), the addition can push the number into the Thousands place. (1020).
  3. Check your work: Does the answer make sense? 275 + 58 should definitely be more than 300 because 70 + 50 is more than 100.
