2-Digit + 2-Digit Game (Column Addition)

This “Double Digit Adder” game focuses on vertical (column) addition of 2-digit numbers. It has separate input boxes for the ones, tens, and hundreds columns. This mimics the traditional column addition method where you calculate from right to left. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.

How to Play the 2-Digit Column Adder Game

  1. Select Difficulty: Select “No Regrouping” or “With Regrouping”.
  2. Enter Your Answer: Add the digits in columns from right to left. Typing a number automatically moves the cursor to the next column to the left. If you chose regrouping then be careful to regroup when necessary. You can put the carry digit at the top of the tens place to help you remember. (Take note that the game will not check your carry digit)
  3. Check Your Work: Click the green Check button (or press the Enter key). The game will tell you if you’re correct. If you are wrong, you will be asked to try again.
  4. Get a New Problem: Click the Next button (or press Enter again) for a new addition problem.
Your score is tracked at the top, showing how many you’ve gotten right out of the total you’ve tried.

2-Digit Column Addition
Column addition is a way to solve math problems by stacking numbers on top of each other based on their Place Value (Tens and Ones).

1. Addition Without Regrouping (Simple)
This happens when the sum of the digits in each column is 9 or less.
Example: 23 + 45
Line them up: Put the Tens under Tens and Ones under Ones.
Add the Ones column first: 3 + 5 = 8.
Add the Tens column second: 2 + 4 = 6.

2. Addition With Regrouping (Carrying)
This happens when a column adds up to 10 or more. Since you can only put one digit in a box, you must “regroup” the extra amount to the next column.
Example: 38 + 25
Step 1: Add the Ones
8 + 5 = 13
We cannot put “13” in the Ones place.
We keep the 3 in the Ones place.
We “carry” (regroup) the 1 over to the Tens place.
Step 2: Add the Tens (Including the Carry)
Now add the Tens digits: 3 + 2, plus the 1 we carried over.
1 (carry) + 3 + 2 = 6

Key Rules to Remember

  • Start on the Right: Always start adding the Ones column first.
  • The “One-Digit” Rule: Only one digit (0-9) can live in a column.
  • Don’t Forget the Carry: If you move a 1 to the Tens column, make sure you add it to the other numbers there!
  • Grid Paper: Using graph paper or drawing vertical lines can help keep your numbers perfectly aligned.

The video gives a clear, step-by-step approach to walk through the regrouping process.
