How to Play the 2-Digit Addition Game
The game is designed to help you practice your 2-digit addition skills in a fun environment.
Here’s how to play:

  1. Look at the Problem: You’ll see two numbers at the top of the purple box. Your goal is to add them together.
  2. Enter Your Answer: Type your answer into the box with the question mark ?.
  3. Check Your Work: Click the green Check button (or press the Enter key). The game will tell you if you’re correct. If you are wrong, you will be shown the correct answer.
  4. Get a New Problem: Click the yellow Next button (or press Enter again) for a new addition problem.
    Your score is tracked at the top, showing how many you’ve gotten right out of the total you’ve tried.
     

Strategies for Mental 1-Digit Addition
You will need to use these strategies for 1 digit addition when you add up the ones digits and the tens digits.
 

  1. The “Count On” Method
    This is a good first step away from simple counting. To solve a problem like 7 + 2, you start with the bigger number and count on the smaller number.
    Example: 7 + 2
    Start with 7 in your head.
    Count on two more: 8, 9.
    The answer is 9.
    This method is most effective when adding a small number, like 1, 2, or 3.

  2. The “Making 10” Strategy
    This is one of the most important mental math tricks. Our number system is based on 10, so getting to 10 makes problems much easier. To add two numbers that sum to more than 10, you break one of the numbers apart to “make a 10” with the other.
    Example: 8 + 5
    You want to make the 8 a 10. You know you need 2 more (8 + 2 = 10).
    Break the 5 into 2 and 3.
    Now, the problem becomes (8 + 2) + 3.
    Since 8 + 2 is 10, the problem is simply 10 + 3.
    The answer is 13.

  3. Doubles and Near Doubles
    Knowing your “doubles” (like 3 + 3 = 6 and 5 + 5 = 10) can help you quickly solve related problems.
    Example: 4 + 5
    You know that 4 + 4 = 8.
    Since 5 is just one more than 4, the answer to 4 + 5 must be one more than 8.
    The answer is 9.
     

By practicing these strategies, you will build the “number sense” that allows you to solve problems quickly in your head. The addition game is a great place to practice these mental tricks until they become second nature.
