3-Digit + 3-Digit Game (Column Addition)

This “Double Digit Adder” game focuses on vertical (column) addition of 3-digit numbers. It has separate input boxes for the ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands columns. This mimics the traditional column addition method where you calculate from right to left. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.

How to Play the 3-Digit Column Adder Game

  1. Select Difficulty: Select “No Regrouping” or “With Regrouping”.
  2. Enter Your Answer: Add the digits in columns from right to left. Typing a number automatically moves the cursor to the next column to the left. If you chose regrouping then be careful to regroup when necessary. You can put the carry digit at the top of the tens place to help you remember. (Take note that the game will not check your carry digit)
  3. Check Your Work: Click the green Check button (or press the Enter key). The game will tell you if you’re correct. If you are wrong, you will be asked to try again.
  4. Get a New Problem: Click the Next button (or press Enter again) for a new addition problem.
Your score is tracked at the top, showing how many you’ve gotten right out of the total you’ve tried.

3-Digit Column Addition
3-digit column addition is very similar to 2-digit addition, but we now include a “Hundreds” column and the possibility of regrouping twice!

The Golden Rule: Right to Left
Always process columns in this order:
Ones (Right)
Tens (Middle)
Hundreds (Left)
1. Addition Without Regrouping (Simple)
Example: 142 + 325
Simply add each column straight down:
Ones: 2 + 5 = 7
Tens: 4 + 2 = 6
Hundreds: 1 + 3 = 4
2. Addition With Regrouping (Multiple Times)
Sometimes, you might need to regroup from the Ones to the Tens, and from the Tens to the Hundreds.
Example: 476 + 258
Step 1: The Ones Column
6 + 8 = 14
Write down the 4.
Carry the 1 to the Tens column.
Step 2: The Tens Column
7 + 5 + 1 (carry) = 13
Write down the 3.
Carry the 1 to the Hundreds column.
Step 3: The Hundreds Column
4 + 2 + 1 (carry) = 7
Write down the 7.
Key Rules to Remember

  • Alignment: Keep your columns straight. If the numbers shift, you might add a Ten to a Hundred by mistake!
  • Write the Carries: Don’t try to remember the carried “1” in your head—write it small at the top of the next column.

The video gives a clear, step-by-step approach to walk through the regrouping process for adding 3-digit numbers.
