2-digit + 1-digit Game (Column Addition)

This game focuses on adding a single-digit number to a double-digit number, with logic to handle cases involving carrying (regrouping) and cases without it. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.

How to Play the 2-digit + 1-digit Column Adder Game

  1. Select Difficulty: Select “No Regrouping” or “With Regrouping”.
  2. Enter Your Answer: Add the digits in columns from right to left. Typing a number automatically moves the cursor to the next column to the left. If you chose regrouping then be careful to regroup when necessary. You can put the carry digit at the top of the tens place to help you remember. (Take note that the game will not check your carry digit)
  3. Check Your Work: Click the green Check button (or press the Enter key). The game will tell you if you’re correct. If you are wrong, you will be asked to try again.
  4. Get a New Problem: Click the Next button (or press Enter again) for a new addition problem.
Your score is tracked at the top, showing how many you’ve gotten right out of the total you’ve tried.

2-digit + 1-digit Column Addition
When adding a 1-digit number to a 2-digit number, the most important step is alignment. You must make sure the single digit is placed directly under the Ones place of the larger number.

No Regrouping (Simple Addition)
Example: 24 + 3
Ones Column: 4 + 3 = 7.
Tens Column: 2 + 0 = 2.
Total: 27.
In this case, the sum of the ones is less than 10.

With Regrouping (Carrying)
Example: 47 + 6
When the numbers in the ones column add up to 10 or more, we have to “regroup” or “carry” a ten over to the Tens column.
The Steps:
Add the Ones: 7 + 6 = 13.
Split the 13: Keep the 3 in the Ones place and carry the 1 (which represents 10) over to the top of the Tens column.
Add the Tens: Add the carried 1 to the 4 already in the Tens place (1 + 4 = 5).

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Wrong Alignment: Never put the 1-digit number under the Tens place.
Incorrect: Adding 24 + 3 and putting the 3 under the 2 would give you 54—which is wrong.
  2. Forgetting the Carry: If you add 7 + 6 and get 13, don’t just write 413. You must add that “1” to the “4” in the tens place.
