Equal Sign Game
 
The Equal Sign Game is an interactive and engaging web-based application designed to help users, learn the meaning of the equal sign. For a first grader, the equal sign (=) means “is the same as” and represents a balance between two sides of an equation. It shows that in a relationship that shows the value on the left is the same as the value on the right.
 

You can also challenge yourself and your friends by turning on the timer to see how many problems you can get correct in 1 minute.

How to Play the Equal Sign Game
The game is designed to help you understand the equal sign.
Here’s how to play:

  1. Timed Option: Check the timer if you want to enable the 60 second timer. Click “Start Game”.
  2. Look at the Problem: You’ll see four sets of dots with the operators and the equal sign.
  3. Enter Your Answer: Count the number of dots and enter the number for each set. Enter the ‘+’ and ‘=’ as well.
  4. Check Your Work: Click the green button (or press the Enter key). The game will tell you if you’re correct. If you are wrong, you will be shown the correct answer.
  5. Get a New Problem: Click the Next button (or press Enter again) for a new addition problem.
    Your score is tracked at the top, showing how many you’ve gotten right out of the total you’ve tried.
  6. Back to Menu Click “Back to Menu” to restart the game.
     

Key concepts for grade 1

  1. “Is the same as”:
    The equal sign shows that the quantities or expressions on both sides of it have the same value.
  2. Balance:
    Think of a balance scale or a seesaw. For it to be balanced, both sides must be the same. An equation is “true” when the sides are balanced.
  3. Not just the answer:
    The equal sign is not a command to “find the answer.” It shows that the expression before it is equivalent to what comes after it.
  4. Both sides matter:
    An equation has two sides, and they must both have the same value. For example, in the equation 3+2=1+5, the value of 3+2 is the same as the value of 1+5.
