How to Play the 1-Digit Subtraction Game
The game is designed to help you practice your 1-digit subtraction skills in a fun environment.
Here’s how to play:

1. Timed Option: Check the timer if you want to enable the 60 second timer. Click “Start Game”.
   
2. Look at the Problem: You’ll see two numbers at the top of the red box. Your goal is to subtract them.
   
3. Enter Your Answer: Type your answer into the box with the question mark ?.
   
4. Check Your Work: Click the yellow Check button (or press the Enter key). The game will tell you if you’re correct. If you are wrong, you will be shown the correct answer.
   
5. Get a New Problem: Click the blue Next button (or press Enter again) for a new subtraction problem.
   Your score is tracked at the top, showing how many you’ve gotten right out of the total you’ve tried.
6. Back to Menu Click “Back to Menu” to restart the game.

 

Strategies for 1-Digit Subtraction
Learning to subtract can be easy and fun with the right techniques. Instead of just counting things to take away, these strategies teach you to think about numbers in a new way.

1. The “Count Back” Method
   This is a great starting point, especially for smaller numbers. To solve a problem like 8 - 2, you start with the first number and count backward the number of times you are subtracting.
   Example: 8 - 2
   Start with 8 in your head.
   Count back two numbers: 7, 6.
   The answer is 6.
   This method is most effective when subtracting a small number, like 1, 2, or 3.
    
   
2. The “Number Line” Method
   A number line is a fantastic visual tool that helps you see subtraction as moving backward. To solve 9 - 4:
   Start at the first number, 9.
   Jump 4 spaces to the left.
   You land on 5. So, 9 - 4 = 5.
   You can also use your fingers as a physical number line!
    
   
3. The “Think Addition” Strategy
   This is a powerful trick that uses the relationship between addition and subtraction. Every subtraction problem can be solved by thinking of it as a missing-number addition problem.
   Example: 7 - 3
   Think: “What number do I need to add to 3 to get 7?"
   You know that 3 + 4 = 7.
   So, the answer to 7 - 3 must be 4.
   This strategy is great for problems where you’ve already memorized the addition facts.
    
   
4. Memorizing Facts
   The final step is to practice these strategies until you can recall the answers instantly. This is called achieving fluency. You can use flashcards, worksheets, or the subtraction game to memorize the answers from 0 - 0 up to 9 - 0. Once you have them memorized, you won’t even have to think about the strategies; the answers will just come to you!
