Single Digit Addition Game

When we add numbers, the order does not matter. Whichever order we add, we will get the same answer. This means that we can use some strategies to make the addition of three or more single digit numbers easier and faster.

This Single Digit Addition game is an interactive tool designed to help you practice and master the math strategies when adding three or more single digit numbers together. This mastery will also be useful when adding multi-digit numbers since we usually add numbers in columns of single digits and then carry or regroup when necessary.

Useful strategies:

  1. Making Tens
Look for pairs of numbers that add up to 10. Once you find a 10, it’s easy to add the remaining numbers.
Example: To solve 4+7+6, you can see that 4+6 makes 10. Then, you just have to add 10+7 to get 17.
  2. Using Doubles
If you see two of the same number in the problem, you can use your knowledge of doubles facts.
Example: For 3+8+3, you can quickly calculate the double, 3+3=6. The problem then becomes 6+8, which is 14.
  3. Adding in Pairs
Even if you don’t find a 10 or a double, you can group the numbers in a way that makes the mental calculation easier.

The key is to train your brain to quickly spot these combinations. The more you practice, the more these strategies will become second nature, and you’ll be able to solve the problems in the game even faster!
