Mental Strategies for Adding Multiples of 10
Learning to add multiples of 10 mentally is a crucial step in building strong number sense and prepares you for more complex multi-digit addition.

  1. Thinking in Tens (Place Value)
Ignore the zeros for a moment and focus on the tens digits.
    Add those single digits together.
Put a zero back at the end of your sum.
    Example: 40 + 30
    Think: “What is 4 + 3?"
    The answer is 7.
    Add a zero back: 70.
    So, 40 + 30 = 70

  2. Counting by Tens (Number Line)
This method is a direct extension of the “Count On” strategy, using jumps of ten. It’s helpful for visualizing the addition.
    How it works:
Start with the first number in your head.
Count on by tens the number of times indicated by the tens digit of the second number.
    Example: 50 + 30
    Start at 50.
    Count on three tens: 60, 70, 80.
    So, 50 + 30 = 80.

By practicing these mental strategies, you’ll find yourself quickly and accurately adding multiples of 10 without needing to write anything down.
