4-Digit + 4-Digit Game (Column Addition)

This “Triple Digit Adder” game focuses on vertical (column) addition of 4-digit numbers. It has separate input boxes for the ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands columns. This mimics the traditional column addition method where you calculate from right to left. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.

How to Play the 4-Digit Column Adder Game

  1. Select Difficulty: Select “No Regrouping” or “With Regrouping”.
  2. Enter Your Answer: Add the digits in columns from right to left. Typing a number automatically moves the cursor to the next column to the left. If you chose regrouping then be careful to regroup when necessary. You can put the carry digit at the top of the tens place to help you remember. (Take note that the game will not check your carry digit)
  3. Check Your Work: Click the green Check button (or press the Enter key). The game will tell you if you’re correct. If you are wrong, you will be asked to try again.
  4. Get a New Problem: Click the Next button (or press Enter again) for a new addition problem.
Your score is tracked at the top, showing how many you’ve gotten right out of the total you’ve tried.

4-Digit Column Addition
Adding 4-digit numbers follows the same logic as adding smaller numbers, but it requires careful attention to place value. A 4-digit number consists of Thousands, Hundreds, Tens, and Ones.

The Place Value Columns
When adding, always align your numbers vertically so the columns match up.
Step-by-Step Method (With Regrouping)
Let’s solve: 4,657 + 2,584
Step 1: Add the Ones
7 + 4 = 11
Write down the 1 in the Ones column.
Carry (regroup) the 1 to the Tens column.
Step 2: Add the Tens
5 + 8 + 1 (carried) = 14
Write down the 4 in the Tens column.
Carry the 1 to the Hundreds column.
Step 3: Add the Hundreds
6 + 5 + 1 (carried)} = 12
Write down the 2 in the Hundreds column.
Carry the 1 to the Thousands column.
Step 4: Add the Thousands
4 + 2 + 1 (carried) = 7
Write down the 7 in the Thousands column.
Final Answer: 7,241

Key Rules to Remember

  • Start from the Right: Always begin adding at the Ones column and move left toward the Thousands.
  • Don’t Forget the “Carry”: If a column adds up to $10$ or more, you must move the “tens” digit of that result to the next column on the left.

The video gives a clear, step-by-step approach to walk through the regrouping process for adding 4-digit numbers.
