Subtract Mixed Numbers Quiz/Game (Like Denominators)
To subtract mixed numbers with like denominators, you can use two main methods: either convert both mixed numbers to improper fractions and then subtract, or you can subtract the whole numbers and fractions separately, regrouping or borrowing from the whole number if the fraction is smaller than the one you’re subtracting from. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.

This game will require you to subtract two mixed numbers with like denominators. You can select the problem type: without regrouping, with regrouping, random mix.If you give a wrong answer, the game will provide the correct answer.

How to subtract mixed numbers
Subtract Mixed Numbers
To subtract mixed numbers, you can use two main methods: either convert both mixed numbers to improper fractions and then subtract, or you can subtract the whole numbers and fractions separately, borrowing from the whole number if the fraction is smaller than the one you’re subtracting from. Both methods require finding a common denominator for the fractional parts before subtracting the numerators.

Method 1: [Convert to Improper Fractions] (/improper-fractions-mixed-numbers-game.html)

  1. Convert to Improper Fractions:
For each mixed number, multiply the whole number by the denominator and add the numerator to get the new numerator. Keep the original denominator.
  2. Subtract:
Since the denominators are the same, subtract the numerators and keep the common denominator.
  3. Convert Back (Optional):
Convert the resulting improper fraction back to a mixed number by dividing the new numerator by the denominator.

Method 2: Subtract Separately

  1. Subtract Fractions:
If the fraction in the top mixed number is larger than or equal to the fraction in the bottom mixed number, you can subtract the fractions directly.
  2. Subtract Whole Numbers:
Subtract the whole number part of the bottom mixed number from the whole number part of the top mixed number.
  3. Regroup (If Needed):
If the fraction in the top mixed number is smaller than the fraction in the bottom mixed number, you need to “borrow” from the whole number part of the top mixed number.
Decrease the whole number by 1 and add that 1 (as a fraction with the common denominator) to the existing fraction.
Now you can subtract the fractions and the whole numbers.
  4. Simplify (Optional):
Simplify the resulting fraction if possible.

The video gives a clear, step-by-step approach to subtract mixed numbers with like denominators.
