How to multiply mixed numbers
Multiply Mixed Numbers
To multiply mixed numbers, first convert each mixed number into an improper fraction by multiplying the whole number by the denominator and adding the numerator. Then, multiply the numerators together and the denominators together to get your answer as an improper fraction. Finally, convert the resulting improper fraction back into a mixed number, if desired, and simplify it if necessary.

  1. Convert mixed numbers to improper fractions Multiply the whole number by the denominator: For a mixed number like 4 ½, multiply 4 by 2. Add the numerator: Add the result to the original numerator. So, 4 * 2 + 1 = 9. Keep the same denominator: The improper fraction becomes 9/2.
  2. Multiply the improper fractions Multiply the numerators: Multiply the top numbers of the two improper fractions. Multiply the denominators: Multiply the bottom numbers of the two improper fractions.
  3. Convert back to a mixed number and simplify
