This Add Fractions Game is a great way to put your skills to the test in a fun environment. By practicing, you’ll start to work out the answers efficiently.
Add Fractions Game
When adding fractions, we need to make sure that we are adding pieces of the same size. The first step is to find a common denominator for both fractions. This can be done by finding the least common multiple (LCM) or by multiplying the denominators. Convert each fraction to an equivalent fraction with the new common denominator, then add the numerators while keeping the common denominator. Finally, simplify the resulting fraction if possible. We can use the butterfly method to help us remember the steps. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.
This game presents two fractions that you need to add. Answers are to be given in proper fractions or improper fractions. If you give a wrong answer, the game will provide a simple, step-by-step explanation to guide you to the correct answer. The game also allows you to enter the upper bound of the denominator to customize the difficulty of the game.

How to add Fractions
Adding Fractions
Step 1: Find a Common Denominator
This is the most important step. A common denominator is a number that both of your original denominators can divide into evenly. You can get a common denominator by multiplying the denominators or find the least common multiple (LCM).
Step 2: Convert to Equivalent Fractions
Once you have the common denominator, you need to convert your original fractions into equivalent fractions. This means changing them so they have the new denominator without changing their value. To do this, figure out what you multiplied the original denominator by to get the common denominator. Then, multiply the numerator by the same number.
Step 3: Add the Numerators
Now that your fractions have the same denominator, you can simply add the numerators together and keep the denominator the same.
Step 4: Simplify (if necessary)
Finally, check to see if your answer can be simplified. A fraction is in its simplest form when the only number that can divide into both the numerator and the denominator is 1.
Butterfly Method
You can also use the butterfly method to simplify and remember the above steps.
It works by using cross-multiplication to find the new numerator and multiplying the denominators to find the new denominator.
This method is helpful because it lets you add fractions without having to find the least common denominator first. You just need to remember to simplify the final answer if possible.
The video gives a clear, step-by-step approach to adding fractions using the butterfly method.
