Divide Fractions and Whole Numbers Game
To divide a fraction by a whole number, write the whole number as a fraction (with a denominator of 1), then use the “Keep, Change, Flip” (or reciprocal) method: keep the first fraction, change division to multiplication, and flip (find the reciprocal of) the second fraction (the whole number). Finally, multiply the numerators and the denominators straight across to find the answer. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.

This game will require you to divide a fraction and a whole number. If you give a wrong answer, the game will provide the correct answer. The game also allows you to enter the upper bound of the denominator to customize the difficulty of the game.

Divide Fractions and Whole Numbers
To divide a fraction by a whole number, write the whole number as a fraction (with a denominator of 1), then use the “Keep, Change, Flip” (or reciprocal) method: keep the first fraction, change division to multiplication, and flip (find the reciprocal of) the second fraction (the whole number). Finally, multiply the numerators and the denominators straight across to find the answer.

Example: Divide 2/3 by 4

  1. Write the whole number as a fraction:
    4 becomes 4/1.
    The problem is now 2/3 ÷ 4/1.
  2. Keep, Change, Flip (KCF):
    Keep: the first fraction: 2/3.
Change: the division sign to a multiplication sign.
Flip: (find the reciprocal of) the second fraction: 4/1 becomes 1/4.
    The problem is now 2/3 × 1/4.
  3. Multiply the fractions:
    Multiply the numerators: 2 × 1 = 2.
    Multiply the denominators: 3 × 4 = 12.
    The answer is 2/12.
  4. Simplify
    the resulting fraction if possible
. 2/12 can be simplified to 1/6 by dividing both the numerator and denominator by 2.
