Evaluate Algebraic Expressions Game
To evaluate an algebraic expression, substitute the given numerical value for each variable and then solve the resulting arithmetic expression by following the order of operations (PEMDAS/BODMAS). Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.

This game generates a random expression and challenges you to substitute values for variables and calculate the correct answer. You’ll be able to choose whether you want to work with one or two variables. If you give a wrong answer, the game will provide the correct answer.

After mastering this game you may want to practice with evaluating algebraic expressions with exponents game.

How to Evaluate Algebraic Expressions
Evaluate Algebraic Expressions

  1. Substitute variables with their values: Find each variable in the expression and replace it with its given numerical value.
  2. Use parentheses: When substituting, it’s a good practice to use parentheses to enclose the value, especially for negative numbers or when the number multiplies the variable. For example, if x = -3, replace it with (-3). If you have 8x and x = -3, it becomes 8(-3) = -24.
  3. Follow the order of operations (PEMDAS/BODMAS):
P: arentheses (or Brackets): Solve any operations inside parentheses first.
E: xponents (or Orders): Calculate any exponents.
M: ultiplication and Division: Perform all multiplication and division from left to right.
A: ddition and Subtraction: Finally, perform all addition and subtraction from left to right.
  4. Calculate the final value: After completing the operations according to PEMDAS, you will have a single numerical value.

The video gives a clear, step-by-step approach to evaluate algebraic expressions using substitution.
