Solve Inequalities Game
To solve an inequality, treat it like an equation and use inverse operations to isolate the variable, performing the same operation on both sides to maintain balance. When you multiply or divide both sides by a negative number, you must reverse the direction of the inequality sign. The final solution will be a range of values, not just a single number. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.

This game will challenge you to solve for a variable in inequalities involving integers. You’ll be able to choose between one-step and two-step problems to match your skill level. If you give a wrong answer, the game will provide the correct answer.

How to Play the Solve Inequalities Game
The game will show you an algebraic expression. Your task is to evaluate the algebraic expression by substituting the given values for the variables.
Here’s how to play:

  1. Inequality Type: Select either one-step or two-step.
  2. Timed Option: Check the timer if you want to enable the 60 second timer. Click “Start Game”.
  3. Look at the Problem: You’ll see an algebraic inequality. Solve for the variable.
  4. Enter Your Answer: You need to select a symbol and enter a number.
  5. Check Your Work: Click the Check button (or press the Enter key). The game will tell you if you’re correct. If you are wrong, you will be shown the correct answer.
  6. Get a New Problem: Click the Next button for a new problem.
Your score is tracked at the top, showing how many you’ve gotten right out of the total you’ve tried.
  7. Back to Menu Click “Back to Menu” to restart the game.

How to Solve Inequalities
Solving an inequality is very similar to solving an equation, but with one crucial difference. The goal is still to isolate the variable, but you need to be careful with the inequality sign.
Solve Inequalities
The Golden Rule of Inequalities
The most important thing to remember is this:
If you multiply or divide both sides of an inequality by a negative number, you must reverse the inequality sign.
If you have a < sign, it becomes a > sign.
If you have a > sign, it becomes a < sign.
If you have a ≤ sign, it becomes a ≥ sign.
If you have a ≥ sign, it becomes a ≤ sign.
This is because multiplying or dividing by a negative number “flips” the relationship between the two sides.

One-Step Inequalities

  1. Identify the inverse operation: Determine the operation (addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division) being performed on the variable.
  2. Apply the inverse operation: Perform the opposite operation on both sides of the inequality to isolate the variable.
  3. Check for negative numbers: If you multiplied or divided both sides by a negative number, flip the inequality sign (e.g., < becomes >, ≥ becomes ≤).

Two-Step Inequalities

  1. Identify the Operations: Look at the operations attached to the variable in the inequality.
  2. Undo Addition or Subtraction: Perform the opposite operation of any addition or subtraction on both sides of the inequality to start isolating the variable. Example: If the inequality is 2x + 1 < 7, subtract 1 from both sides to get 2x < 6.
  3. Undo Multiplication or Division: Now, perform the inverse operation of the multiplication or division on both sides of the inequality. Example: For 2x < 6, divide both sides by 2 to get x < 3.
  4. Flip the Symbol (if necessary): If at any step you multiply or divide both sides by a negative number, reverse the inequality symbol. Example: If you have –4h ≤ 16, you would divide by -4 and get h ≥ –4.
  5. Check Your Solution (Optional): You can check your solution by picking a value that fits the inequality and substituting it back into the original inequality.

The video gives a clear, step-by-step approach to solve one-step and two-step inequalities.
