To simplify algebraic expressions, use the distributive property to remove parentheses, then collect and combine like terms by adding or subtracting their coefficients. Always follow the order of operations (PEMDAS/BODMAS), performing multiplication and division before addition and subtraction. Rearrange terms to group like ones together for easier combination. This game generates a random expression and challenges you to simplify it by combining like terms. If you select “With Parentheses” you would need to use the distributive property to remove the parenthesis. If you give a wrong answer, the game will provide the correct answer.

How to Play the Simplify Algebraic Expressions Game
The game will show you an algebraic expression. Your task is to simplify the algebraic expression using the distributive property to remove parentheses, then combine like terms.
Here’s how to play:

  1. Select the problem types: Select “Simple Terms” or “With Parentheses”.
  2. Timed Option: Check the timer if you want to enable the 60 second timer. Click “Start Game”.
  3. Look at the Problem: You’ll see an algebraic expression. Simplify the expression: Use distributive property if there is parentheses and then combine like terms.
  4. Enter Your Answer: Enter the simplified expression.
  5. Check Your Work: Click the Check button (or press the Enter key). The game will tell you if you’re correct. If you are wrong, you will be shown the correct answer.
  6. Get a New Problem: Click the Next button for a new problem.
    Your score is tracked at the top, showing how many you’ve gotten right out of the total you’ve tried.
  7. Back to Menu Click “Back to Menu” to restart the game.

  1. Apply the Distributive Property, if needed.
    If there are numbers outside of parentheses, multiply that number by each term inside the parentheses.
    For example, in 3(2x - 1), distribute the 3: 3 * 2x = 6x and 3 * -1 = -3, resulting in 6x - 3.
    When distributing a negative number, make sure to include the negative sign in the multiplication.
  2. Combine Like Terms
    Identify like terms: These are terms that have the same variable (or no variable, for constants) raised to the same power.
    Group like terms: Move them next to each other in the expression to make them easier to combine.
    Combine coefficients: Add or subtract the numbers in front of the like variables.
    Example: 3x + 5x becomes 8x.
    Example: -4y - 8y becomes -12y.
    Keep different variables or variables with different exponents separate.
  3. Follow the Order of Operations
    P: arentheses/ Brackets.
    E: xponents/ Orders.
    M: ultiplication and Division (from left to right).
    A: ddition and Subtraction (from left to right).
