This Solve Literal Equations Game is a great way to put your skills to the test in a fun environment. By practicing, you’ll start to work out the answers efficiently.
Solve Literal Equations Game
Literal equations are formulas where you have multiple variables (letters) instead of just numbers. Solving them means rearranging the formula to isolate a specific variable. To solve literal equations, identify the variable you want to isolate, and then use inverse operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) to move all other variables and constants to the other side of the equation. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.
This game is designed to help you master the process of solving literal equations. The process involves using inverse operations—like multiplication to undo division—to move terms while ensuring the equation remains balanced by performing the same operation on both sides. If you get an answer wrong, it will show you the correct solution. Check out this other Solve for a Variable Game (using addition or subtraction).
Isolate the variable using multiplication or division. For answers like 'ab', enter 'ab' in the top box and '1' in the bottom.

How to solve a literal equation
To solve literal equations, identify the variable you want to isolate, and then use inverse operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) to move all other variables and constants to the other side of the equation. You need to use the reverse order of operations. This means you generally undo addition and subtraction first, then multiplication and division.
Step 1: Undo Addition or Subtraction
First, check if the variable you are solving for ($h$) is grouped with any other terms through addition or subtraction. If it is, move those terms to the opposite side of the equation.
Step 2: Undo Multiplication or Division
Look at the term containing the variable you want. Identify everything that is being multiplied or divided by it. You must divide or multiply the entire other side by that grouping.
Step 3: Clear Parentheses or Groups (if the variable is inside)
If your target variable is inside a set of parentheses, you have two choices:
Direct Divide (Preferred): Divide the outside group first, then move the remaining terms.
Distribute: Multiply the outside term into the parentheses, then proceed with Steps 1 and 2.
