1-digit + 1-digit Game (Column Addition)
 
This “Single Digit Adder” game focuses on vertical (column) addition of 1-digit numbers. It has separate input boxes for the ones and tens. This mimics the traditional column addition method where you calculate from right to left. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.

 

 

How to Play the 1-digit Column Adder Game

1. Select Difficulty: Select “Simple (sum < 10)” or “Advanced (sum ≥ 10)”.
   
2. Enter Your Answer: Add the digits in columns from right to left. Typing a number automatically moves the cursor to the next column to the left.
   
3. Check Your Work: Click the green Check button (or press the Enter key). The game will tell you if you’re correct. If you are wrong, you will be asked to try again.
   
4. Get a New Problem: Click the Next button (or press Enter again) for a new addition problem.
   Your score is tracked at the top, showing how many you’ve gotten right out of the total you’ve tried.
    
   

1-digit Column Addition
Column addition is a way to add numbers by stacking them vertically. This aligns the digits by their “place value,” making it easier to solve larger problems.
 

Adding When the Total Less than 10
When adding single digits, we place one number directly above the other.
Example: 5 + 3

1. Align: Keep the numbers in a straight vertical line.
   
2. Add: Combine the numbers.
   
3. Result: Write the total directly under the line.
    
   

Adding When the Total is Over 9
When the sum of two digits is 10 or more, we have to “carry” the tens value into a new column.
Example: 7 + 8

1. Add the digits: 7 + 8 = 15.
   
2. Identify the parts:
   The 5 is in the Ones place.
   The 1 is in the Tens place.
   
3. Place the digits:
   Write the 5 in the Ones column.
   Write the 1 in the Tens column (to the left).
    
   

Key Tips for Success

• Keep it Neat: If your columns are crooked, you might accidentally add the wrong numbers.
  
• Use Touch Points: If you are stuck, imagine dots on the numbers (e.g., 3 has three points) and count them up.
