How to subtract decimals

  1. Line up the decimals.
Write the first number on top of the second number so that their decimal points are in a straight, vertical line. Remember that the decimal point of a whole number is after the rightmost digit. All the digits will then be in their correct place value columns.
  2. Add placeholder zeros.
Add a zero to the end of the whole number so they match up. This helps you keep your columns organized and prevents mistakes.
  3. Subtract normally.
Subtract the numbers in each column, starting from the right and moving to the left. If you need to, you can borrow just like you would with regular subtraction.
  4. Place the decimal point.
Bring the decimal point straight down from where it was lined up in the problem.

The video gives a clear, step-by-step approach to walk through the process of subtracting decimals.
