How to Round Decimals
Rounding decimals is a way to simplify a number by making it shorter while keeping its value close to the original.
Rounding Decimals Lesson

  1. Identify the rounding place value. This is the digit you want to round to (e.g., the tenths place, the hundredths place).
  2. Look at the digit immediately to the right. This is the “deciding digit."
  3. Apply the rounding rule:
If the deciding digit is 4 or less (0, 1, 2, 3, 4), you keep the rounding digit the same.
If the deciding digit is 5 or greater (5, 6, 7, 8, 9), you add one to the rounding digit (rounding up).
  4. Drop all digits to the right of the rounding place.

Examples
Example 1: Rounding to the nearest tenth
Let’s round 7.362 to the nearest tenth.

  1. The rounding place is the tenths place. The digit is 3.
  2. The digit to its right is 6.
  3. Since 6 is greater than 5, we add one to the 3, which becomes 4.
  4. We drop the digits 6 and 2.
    The rounded number is 7.4.

Example 2: Rounding to the nearest hundredth
Let’s round 12.8419 to the nearest hundredth.

  1. The rounding place is the hundredths place. The digit is 4.
  2. The digit to its right is 1.
  3. Since 1 is less than 5, we keep the 4 the same.
  4. We drop the digits 1 and 9.
    The rounded number is 12.84.
