Divide Decimals Game

The best way to get good at dividing decimals to do it often. This Divide Decimals Game is an interactive and engaging web-based application designed to help you practice and improve your skills.

To divide decimals, convert the divisor into a whole number by moving the decimal point to the right. Then, move the decimal point in the dividend the same number of places and in the same direction. Next, perform the division as you would with dividing decimals by whole numbers. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.

In this Game, the divisors are 0.2, 0.5, 0.02, or 0.05. The intention is to simplify the division and concentrate on the process of moving the decimal point correctly. The Game has an optional 60-second timer, encouraging players to solve the problems quickly and efficiently.

How to divide decimals by decimals
To divide a decimal by a decimal, you follow a similar process to dividing whole numbers, with one key extra step of moving the decimal point.
Divide Decimals Lesson

  1. Move the Decimal Point in the Divisor: Look at the divisor (the second number). Move the decimal point to the right until it becomes a whole number. Count how many places you moved it.
Example: To solve 1.2÷0.4, you move the decimal in 0.4 one place to the right to make it 4.
  2. Move the Decimal Point in the Dividend: Now, you must move the decimal point in the dividend (the first number) the exact same number of places to the right. If you run out of digits, add zeros to the end.
Example: Since you moved the decimal one place in the divisor, you also move it one place in the dividend 1.2, making it 12.
  3. Perform the Division: You now have a standard division problem with whole numbers. Solve this new problem.
Example: The problem is now 12÷4. The answer is 3.
  4. Place the Decimal Point in the Answer: The decimal point in your final answer goes directly above the new position of the decimal point in the dividend.

Example
Let’s solve 8.45÷0.05.

  1. Divisor: The divisor is 0.05. We need to move the decimal two places to the right to make it 5.
  2. Dividend: We also move the decimal two places to the right in 8.45, making it 845.
  3. New Problem: The problem is now 845÷5.
  4. Solve:
    845÷5=169.
The answer to 8.45÷0.05 is 169.

The video gives a clear, step-by-step approach to walk through the process of dividing a decimal by a decimal.
