How to multiply decimals by whole tens
Multiplying a decimal by a whole number, like 10, 20, 30, or 40, combines two math skills: decimal multiplication and a simple shortcut. You can do this in two simple steps.
Step 1: Multiply the Numbers without the Decimal
First, ignore the decimal point for a moment and multiply the numbers as if they were whole numbers.
Example: To multiply 3.4×20:
Ignore the decimal in 3.4, making it 34.
Multiply 34×20.
This is the same as 34×2 with a zero at the end: 34×2=68.
Add the zero back on: 680.
So, the product of 34×20 is 680.
Step 2: Place the Decimal Point
Now, you need to put the decimal point back into your answer. The number of decimal places in your final answer must match the number of decimal places in the original decimal number.
The original number, 3.4, has one decimal place.
Take your answer from Step 1, 680, and place the decimal point so it has one decimal place.
Start from the right side of the number and move one place to the left.
680.0 becomes 68.0, or just 68.
So, 3.4×20=68.
