How to Compare Decimals
Compare Decimals

  1. Compare the whole number part: Look at the digits to the left of the decimal point first. The number with the larger whole number is the greater number.
Example: 12.5 is greater than 9.8 because 12 is greater than 9.
  2. Compare decimal digits from left to right: If the whole numbers are the same, start comparing the digits to the right of the decimal point, one place at a time.
    Example: Compare 4.72 and 4.75.
The whole number part is the same (4).
The tenths place is the same (7).
Move to the hundredths place: 5 is greater than 2.
    Therefore, 4.75 is greater than 4.72 (4.75>4.72).
