How to multiply decimals by decimals
To multiply a decimal by a decimal, you follow a similar process to multiplying whole numbers, with one key extra step for placing the decimal point.
Multiply Decimals Lesson
Step 1: Ignore the Decimal Points
First, treat the numbers as if they were whole numbers and multiply them as you normally would.
Example: To solve 0.03×0.5, you would first multiply 3×5.
3x5=15.
This gives you the digits of your answer, but not the final placement of the decimal point.
Step 2: Count the Total Decimal Places
Now, you need to count the total number of digits that are to the right of the decimal point in all of the original numbers you are multiplying.
Example:
In 0.03, there are two digits after the decimal point.
In 0.5, there is one digit after the decimal point.
Adding these together, you get a total of 2+1=3 decimal places.
Step 3: Place the Decimal in Your Answer
Starting from the right-most digit of your answer from Step 1, move the decimal point to the left by the total number of places you counted in Step 2.
Example:
Your number from Step 1 is 15.
You need to move the decimal point 3 places to the left.
Starting with 15., move the decimal point 3 places to the left to get 0.015.
The final answer to 0.03×0.5 is 0.015.
