What is a Square?
When you “square” a number, you are raising it to the power of 2. The operation is represented by an exponent of 2, like this: 42.
To find the square of a number, you just multiply it by itself:
42 = 4×4 = 16
82 = 8×8 = 64
What is a Square Root?
The square root is the reverse operation of squaring a number. It answers the question: “What number, when multiplied by itself, gives me this number?"
The symbol for the square root is the radical sign, \(\sqrt{}\). For example, \(\sqrt{25}\) is read as “the square root of 25."
To find the square root, you determine the base number that was multiplied by itself to get the original number:
\(\sqrt{25}\) = 5 because 5×5=25
\(\sqrt{81}\) = 9 because 9×9=81
