Given:
The distance between B(10, 18) and A(x, 3) is 17

To find:
One possible value of x

Solution:

Let AB be the hypotenuse of a right triangle ABC.

Length of BC is 18 – 3 = 15

Length of AC is 10 – x

Using Pythagoras theorem and factoring of quadratics

Answer: either 2 or 18
