Simplify Improper Fractions Game
To simplify an improper fraction, you can divide the numerator by the denominator to find a mixed number. The quotient becomes the whole number, and the remainder becomes the numerator of the fractional part, which keeps the original denominator. If the fractional part of the mixed number can be further reduced, find the Greatest Common Factor (GCF) of its numerator and denominator and divide both by it to get the simplified fraction. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.

This game will show you a improper fraction that you need to simplify to a mixed number. If you give a wrong answer, the game will provide a simple, step-by-step explanation to guide you to the correct answer. The game also allows you to enter the upper bound of the denominator to customize the difficulty of the game.

Steps to Simplify an Improper Fraction

  1. Perform the division:
Divide the numerator (top number) by the denominator (bottom number) of the improper fraction.
  2. Identify the quotient and remainder:
The whole number part of your answer is the quotient from the division. The remainder becomes the new numerator.
  3. Write as a mixed number:
Place the remainder over the original denominator to form the fractional part of the mixed number.
  4. Simplify the fractional part (if needed):
If the fractional part can be reduced, divide both the new numerator and the denominator by their greatest common factor (GCF) to express the fraction in its lowest terms.

The video gives a clear, step-by-step approach to simplifying improper fractions to mixed numbers.
