How to Round Whole Numbers
The key to rounding is to look at the digit immediately to the right of the place you are rounding to.
If this digit is 5 or greater (5, 6, 7, 8, or 9), you round up the digit in the rounding place.
If this digit is 4 or less (0, 1, 2, 3, or 4), you keep the digit in the rounding place the same.
Rounding Numbers Lesson

  1. Find the rounding place: Identify the specific place value you need to round to (e.g., the tens place, the hundreds place, etc.).
  2. Look to the right: Examine the digit directly to the right of your rounding place.
  3. Round up or stay the same:
If the digit to the right is 5 or more, add one to the digit in your rounding place.
If the digit to the right is 4 or less, leave the digit in your rounding place as it is.
  4. Finish the number: All digits to the right of the rounding place become zeros.

Example: Rounding Whole Number
Let’s round 547 to the nearest ten.
The rounding place is the tens place. The digit is 4.
The digit to its right is 7.
