How to Play the Roman Numeral Converter Game
This game is designed to help you practice converting between Roman and Arabic Numerals.
Here’s how to play:

1. Conversion Type: Select “Convert Arabic to Roman Numeral”, “Convert Roman to Arabic Numeral” or “Random Mix”.
2. Maximum Number: Enter in the maximum value to practice.
3. Timed Option: Check the timer if you want to enable the 60 second timer. Click “Start Game”.
   
4. Look at the Problem: You’ll see either a Roman or Arabic Numeral. Convert it.
   
5. Enter Your Answer: Type your answer into the box with the question mark ?.
   
6. Check Your Work: Click the Check button (or press the Enter key). The game will tell you if you’re correct. If you are wrong, you will be shown the correct answer.
   
7. Get a New Problem: Click the Next button (or press Enter again) for a new problem.

First, memorize the seven basic Roman numeral symbols and their corresponding Arabic (standard) number values.
I = 1
V = 5
X = 10
L = 50
C = 100
D = 500
M = 1,000
 

Conversion Rules
Conversion is a matter of analyzing the position of each numeral and applying one of two rules: addition or subtraction.

1. Addition: When a Roman numeral of equal or smaller value is placed to the right of a larger one, you add the values.
   Example: VI = 5 + 1 = 6
   Example: XXI = 10 + 10 + 1 = 21
    
   
2. Subtraction: When a Roman numeral of a smaller value is placed to the left of a larger one, you subtract the smaller value from the larger one. This rule is most commonly used for numbers that would otherwise require four repeated symbols (e.g., 4, 9, 40, 90, 400, 900).
   Example: IV = 5 - 1 = 4 (instead of IIII)
   Example: IX = 10 - 1 = 9 (instead of VIIII)
   Example: XL = 50 - 10 = 40 (instead of XXXX)
   Example: CM = 1,000 - 100 = 900 (instead of DCCCC)
    
   
3. The Rule of Repetition
   Symbols like I, X, C, and M can be repeated up to three times in a row to add their values.
   Example: III = 1 + 1 + 1 = 3
   Example: XX = 10 + 10 = 20
   The symbols V, L, and D can never be repeated.
   A symbol cannot be repeated more than three times consecutively.
   Invalid: IIII (should be IV)
   Invalid: XXXX (should be XL)
    
   

To convert a complex Roman numeral, read it from left to right, looking for pairs that follow the subtraction rule first. Then, add the values of all the remaining numerals.
For example, to convert MCMXCIV:
Read left to right and identify any subtraction pairs. Here, you have CM (900) and XC (90) and IV (4).
The remaining numerals are M.
Add the values together: M (1,000) + CM (900) + XC (90) + IV (4) = 1,994.
