How to write numbers in words
Converting a number to words is about understanding the place value of each digit and using the correct words for each grouping.
Spelling Numbers
Step 1: Break the Number into Groups
Starting from the right, break the number into groups of three digits. Each group represents a different power of a thousand (hundreds, thousands, millions, etc.).
Example: Let’s convert the number 123,456,789.
123 is the millions group.
456 is the thousands group.
789 is the hundreds group.

Step 2: Write Each Group in Words
Next, write out each three-digit group as if it were a stand-alone number.
Example: Using our number 123,456,789:
123: “one hundred twenty-three”
456: “four hundred fifty-six”
789: “seven hundred eighty-nine”

Step 3: Combine the Groups with Place Values
Finally, put the word forms of each group together, adding the correct place value name at the end of each group (except the last one).
Example: Using our number 123,456,789:
Start with the largest group: “one hundred twenty-three million”
Add the next group: “four hundred fifty-six thousand”
Add the last group: “seven hundred eighty-nine”
Combine them all: “one hundred twenty-three million, four hundred fifty-six thousand, seven hundred eighty-nine”.

Special Considerations
Using Hyphens: You should use a hyphen for compound numbers from 21 to 99, such as “twenty-one,” “fifty-five,” etc.
The word “and”: You generally use the word “and” when a number includes a fraction or a decimal point (e.g., “one and a half”), but not in standard US English to connect hundreds to tens (e.g., “one hundred fifty” not “one hundred and fifty”).
Zeroes: If a group of three has a zero, you simply skip that group’s place value name. For example, 10,000,000 would be “ten million,” not “ten million, zero thousand.”
