In the order of operations, absolute value bars act like parentheses. You must solve what is inside absolute value bars (which makes the result non-negative) before you perform any of the external operations.

How to play the “Absolute Value (Mixed Op) Game”

  1. Choose your Challenge
Level 1 |x|: Focuses on one single expression. Great for practicing the absolute value logic.
Level 2 |x| [op] |y|: The op can be +,-,×,÷. You must solve two absolute value sets before combining them.
Level 3 |x| [op] (y): You will see terms like |-7| ÷ (-3). Remember: the bars change the -7, but the parentheses do not change the -3.

  2. The “Identify” Phase
Before you look at the numbers, look at the operator symbol. Each one requires a different set of rules once the absolute value bars are gone.

  3. The Absolute Bar Phase
Rule 1: |x| and |-x| always become positive.
Rule 2: -|x| always becomes negative.
Rule 3: Parentheses (x) do not change the sign.
