In the order of operations, absolute value bars act like parentheses. You must solve what is inside absolute value bars (which makes the result non-negative) before you perform the division.

Divide Absolute Value Game
Just like addition and subtraction, the absolute value bars must be removed before you can calculate the final quotient.

How to play the “Divide Absolute Value Game”

  1. Choose your Challenge
Level 1 |x|: Focuses on one single expression. Great for practicing the absolute value logic.
Level 2 |x| ÷ |y|: Introduces division. You must solve two absolute value sets before combining them.
Level 3 (Mixed Mode) |x| ÷ (y): You will see terms like |-7| ÷ (-3). Remember: the bars change the -7, but the parentheses do not change the -3.

  2. The Method
The absolute value bars must be removed before you can calculate the final product.
    Step 1: Evaluate the first term. (e.g., |-20| = 20).
    Step 2: Evaluate the second term. (e.g., -|5| = -5).
    Step 3: Divide the results. (20 ÷ -5 = -4).

  3. Mastering the Signs
Once the bars are gone, the game becomes a test of your division sign rules.
    Positive ÷ Positive → Positive
    Negative ÷ Negative → Positive
    Positive ÷ Negative → Negative
    Negative ÷ Positive → Negative

  4. Worked Examples
    Example A: Standard Division
    |-100| ÷ |-25|
    Evaluate |-100| = 100
    Evaluate |-25| = 25
    Divide: 100 ÷ 25 = 4

Example B: Negative Outside the Bars
    -|40| ÷ |-8|
    Evaluate -|40| = -40
    Evaluate |-8| = 8
    Divide: -40 ÷ 8 = -5

Example C: The “Mixed Mode” (Bars vs. Parentheses)
    |-18| ÷ (-3)
    Evaluate |-18| = 18
The (-3) is in parentheses, not bars, so it stays -3.
    Divide: 18 ÷ -3 = -6
