Absolute value is the distance between a number and zero on a number line. Because it measures distance, an absolute value is never negative.

Absolute Value Game
This game is designed to help you visualize absolute value not as a math rule, but as a physical distance.
In math, we represent absolute value by placing two vertical bars around a number: |x|.
|5| = 5 (5 is five units away from zero)
|-5| = 5 (-5 is also five units away from zero)

How to play the “Absolute Value Game”

  1. The Core Objective
In this game, a point will appear on a number line (either positive or negative). Your job is to determine its absolute value, which is simply the distance between that point and zero.

  2. How to Play Step-by-Step
    1) Look at the Point: A yellow dot will appear on the number line.
    2) Ignore the Sign: Don’t worry about whether the number is to the left (negative) or right (positive) of the center.
    3) Count the “Steps”: Imagine you are standing at zero. How many units would you have to walk to reach the dot?
    4) Select the Answer: Choose the positive number that matches that distance.

    Example:
  • If the point is at -7, you are 7 units away from zero.
  • The absolute value is 7.
  • You would click the button labeled 7.

  1. Understanding the Visual Feedback
When you submit an answer, the game provides a visual “path” to help you learn:
The Jump Arc: A green dashed line will appear, “jumping” from zero to the point. This shows you the actual distance you just measured.
The Correction: If you pick a negative number (though the game usually offers positive options to keep you on track), remember that distance can never be negative.

  2. Pro Tips for High Scores
Symmetry is Key: Notice that |5| and |-5| are the exact same distance from zero. They will both result in the same answer: 5.
Zero is Special: The absolute value of zero is 0, because you are already there.
Don’t Overthink: If you see the bars |-x|, just “erase” the negative sign in your mind and pick the positive version of that number.
