There are four sets of “subtraction within 20” worksheets:
Subtract 9 (eg. 16 - 9)
Subtract 8 (eg. 17 - 8)
Subtract 7, 8, or 9
Subtraction with numbers < 20 (eg. 17 - 6)
When subtracting 9 from a teen number (a number between 10 and 19), you can use the following method.
Let’s look at some examples:
Examples:
Subtract 9 from 14:
14 - 9 can be done in 2 steps
10 - 9 = 1
4 + 1 = 5
So, 14 − 9 = 5
Subtract 9 from 17:
17 - 9 can be done in 2 steps
10 - 9 = 1
7 + 1 = 8
So, 17 − 9 = 8
Subtract 9 from 11:
11 - 9 can be done in 2 steps
10 - 9 = 1
1 + 1 = 2
So, 11 − 9 = 2
After some practice, the student may recognize the pattern of adding 1 when subtracting 9. This approach is particularly useful for mental math, and it helps students develop their understanding of numbers and basic subtraction concepts.
